Shock Desk

Shock Desk: sudden sector moves, as they happen

After each US market close, DELAX checks every sector against the market. When one moves far more than it usually does in a day, it appears here, with what happened next.

How to use it

  1. See what moved. Each entry is a sector that rose or fell unusually far compared with the rest of the market that day.
  2. See what usually came next. The table below shows, for each sector, how often past drops were half won back within a day, a week or a month.
  3. See what it means for you. Open the Workspace to check how much of your own portfolio sits in that sector.

After past drops, sector by sector

How many past drops in each sector were at least half won back within 1, 5 and 20 trading days. The range beside each count shows how far the true share could reasonably be, given how many past cases there are.

How a move is measured

Each sector is the average daily move of the companies DELAX tracks in it, minus the S&P 500's move that day: its move against the market. A move counts when it is at least 2.5 times that sector's usual daily swing over the past year. The whole market (the S&P 500 itself) is measured the same way.
